Welcome!
Welcome to the University of Michigan Bengali Student Association Rickshaw Project Web Log!
One of the first things a person notices when they go to Bangladesh is rickshaws. On the left is a picture of a typical rickshaw. People call different things in different countries rickshaws, but these cycle-rickshaws are the most common sort that people get around in.
Rickshaws are often colorful and painted with icons from Bengali culture. They're ubiquitous, even with the surge of automobiles in the last few years. Even though their industry is being marginalized by efforts to modernize streets, they're an important part of our culture.
The Bengali Student Association is getting people together to build our very own rickshaw. We are in the brainstorming and recruiting phase now, and we hope to have lots of updates throughout this year, until we finally have a finished rickshaw! We might also collaborate using this blog. Interested? Have ideas? We invite you to join in! Even if you can't commit to anything, we'd love to hear from you! Our email is umrickshaws@gmail.com, or you can just leave a comment on this post and we'll make sure to contact you.
